To Be Absent from the Body – Present with the Lord

Christians and non-Christians alike have both heard the bible verse ‘to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord’, but what does it mean and where can you find it in the bible?

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 Plus 9 KJV

For the most part, people only recite part of the verse leaving ‘to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord’ out there by itself, but when you read the verses preceding it, the verse takes on a much deeper meaning.

6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

These three verses alone are powerful in themselves, but when you add verse 9 think about them again.

9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent from the body, we may be accepted of him.

A Closer Look at 2 Corinthians 5:6-9

When you think of what will become of you after you die, what do you think about? For Christians, it is an easy answer – we will be present with the Lord. What about those who are not Christians – what do they think? What does these verses mean for our life here on earth? Should it change the way we live?

Non-Christians think one of two ways: either they are ‘a good enough person’ to get into heaven or they don’t believe they have to worry about the after life. I know this is a fine line since there are people who ‘claim’ they don’t believe in God or heaven and others who believe something totally different like: we will become a star or we will be reincarnated.

Whatever you believe, know this – Heaven is for real. Do you really want to take a chance on your soul’s eternity? What about your children?

A closer look…

When Paul wrote these words he was saying – if we are in our earthly bodies we are away from the Lord. Yes, He is always with us, but not where we can stand face to face which makes the difference here.

While we are human and fear what earthy aches and pains death can bring, we as Christian should look as death as the final step we must take to be in the present with the Lord. Think about it…we will one day step out of this earthly body that hurts, becomes ill, loses its temper, is tempted, and so many other things I couldn’t possibly name them all and into a new body where we will not have to experience these things ever again.

Our earthly body is merely a place for us to occupy while we are here on earth. When it is time for us to move on, we will have our new body – our heavenly body. It’s the body that will be present with the Lord.

Verse 7 is what Christians live by – we walk by faith and not by sight. Some people have a hard time with this because they want to see it before they believe in it. I heard something one time that might help:

An adult and a child were having a conversation about something the child believed in, but the adult did not. So the child asked, “Have you ever seen a million dollars?” When the adult answered ‘no’, the child shot back, “just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it don’t exist.”

How true this is. Children can believe on many things without seeing it. Adults on the other hand lose that childlike quality. Often, their hearts become hardened making it almost impossible for them to give their life and heart to the Lord. If only they could see things through the eyes of a child.

In verse 9, we can take comfort in the fact that no matter where we are God will accept us. We need only to accept him.

How to Be Present with the Lord

If you have ever wondered how you can be present with the Lord, all you need to do is believe that Jesus Christ came down to earth as a baby and died on the cross so that we may one day go to heaven.

You need only to ask Jesus to come and live in your heart and ask him to forgive you of all your sins – no matter how big or small. Tell him you love him and one day want to be present with him in heaven.

To find out more about being saved from your sins and going to heaven, read Romans 10:9-13. If you do not have a bible, check with a local church. We use the King James Version which is considered the closest translation to the bible scrolls there is in the English language.

You can also find a bible in your local hospitals, motels, hotels, and doctor’s offices that says ‘Gideon International’. These bibles have been hand placed by men who want you to learn about the word of God.

We love comments, please leave us your thoughts about these verses as everyone will have their own opinion. What you say may help others. May God bless you all.

Mormons jehovah wnsseites and other cults dont understand salvation is not through works but only through the Spirit which is IN Christ Jesus Our Lord who can save them. If you talk to a mormon they well say they have no sin they believe baptism freed them from all sin there fore they have no longer sin there fore no reason to repent.

If you are saved by Jesus Christ, when you die you will go to heaven to be with Him for ever.
